Some paintings are finished quickly. Escalante was not. Over several years, I returned to this piece again and again — building up layers, stripping them back. The result is a work that carries real time within it.
Inspired by the geological layering of canyon terrain, Escalante captures the slow, ancient accumulation of minerals and sediment that defines the American Southwest. Painted on clay board for exceptional fluidity and depth.
